A trail of snails curls over a pink hillside to a house built from a shell, where Missus McGool asks the girl which witch she will be.
The girl crosses a log over a bright pink river, in a landscape of ice-cream trees and jelly clouds.

What's it about?

On the one hundredth of June, one peculiar girl discovers she might be a witch and has to decide which witch (get it?) she’s going to be. To find out, she meets a witch whose hat kisses the moon and a cook who makes extra special flavour pies. It’s about creativity, confidence and daring to try. Want to know more than that? You’ll just have to buy it, Pauline.

Who's it for?

Ages 5 to 8 is probably the sweet spot, but our reviewers tell us 4-year-olds, teenagers and even the odd grandad love it too. It’s ideal for independent, curious-minded children who have their own sense of humour. It’s perfect to read together at bedtime or to be tackled alone by early readers.

What's it like?

A funny picture book told in bouncing, rhyming verse, with bold hand-drawn illustrations on every page. It’s written to be read aloud, ideally in silly voices.

Is it scary?

No. We understand some people find witches scary, but not ours. Instead they paint, collect snails and grow weird flowers. No small boys were pickled during the making of this book. Promise.

A meadow of oversized red, pink and yellow flowers, the girl small among the stems while a witch crouches to sniff one.
A flour-freckled cook holds a pie aloft in a kitchen stacked to the ceiling with pink and blue pies.

How long does it take to read?

About 10 minutes read aloud. But then, that depends on your reading level. It’s 64 pages, so a proper bedtime story you can get stuck into.

Will grown-ups enjoy reading it?

Yes. At least the fun ones will, and you are fun, aren’t you? Which Witch? is written to be fun to read out loud, not just to listen to. As one happy parent put it: “I love that it’s funny for the kids and has little bits that make the adults smile too.” Thanks, Kate.

Who are The Whoopsies?

That’s us, duh. We are The Whoopsies, born in Glasgow, Scotland. We write and draw everything ourselves, and Which Witch? is our debut picture book, made with more love than your Gran’s roast dinner. Soggy cabbage not included.

Is it good for a child who feels a bit different?

Yes. The main character is the odd one out: she sits at the back of the class in her spiral red shoes, doodling stories and dreaming of pink fish. Perhaps there’s a reason she’s a bit different…

Where can I buy it?

Right here for £8.99 with free UK delivery, and a handwritten note. We’re nice like that. If you prefer the impersonal route, it’s also available on Amazon, and as an ebook on Kindle, Apple Books, Google Play Books and Kobo.

What other grown-ups say

My daughter is a reluctant reader but she picks this one up by herself. That alone is worth five stars.

Finally a bedtime book I actually look forward to reading. Both kids in stitches.
Dad of two
Honestly such a joy of a book. Every time we read it we find something we missed before.

Your pal just shot {stars} and reckons you haven't got the finger speed to beat them.

You've officially humiliated them. How will they ever recover?

Well, that’s embarrassing. Looks like your pal was right… Have another go before they find out?
